National Welsh Rugby Union Team Install ECB Cold Spa
Back in April 2006 ECB Equine Ltd lent The Welsh Rugby Team one of its Equine Spa units. The success of humans using one of ECB’s equine spas in Ireland lead to ECB and the conditioning coach of TWRT (The Welsh Rugby Team) Mark Bennett putting there heads together to see if it would benefit his team. They had the spa for the remainder of that season and both Mark and the lads were extremely impressed with the results. “During the 2006 6-Nations
Tournament we used the Equine Spa. It was used as an integral part of our training and recovery program. It is difficult to quantify the benefits the system provides but the facts are that the players requested to use it on a more regular basis as the tournament progressed. They felt it decreased the soreness and fatigue they felt post – game and training. It is a convenient system to use, easy to operate and maintain (especially in comparison to filling baths with bags of ice!) and offers a high degree of control in terms of the temperature of operation, the depth to which players require submersion and degree of agitation of the water. The spa has become a vital part of our preparation which we intend to use as part of our on-going preparation.”
The following year Mark asked ECB if they could once again have it for the coming season.
Now, a year on and ECB have installed three of the first human Cold Spa units into the training ground just outside Cardiff. The Cold Spa is obviously smaller than the Equine Spa so the number of players who can use it at any one time is less. On the upside the unit can be installed almost anywhere where there is a standard house hold plug. There is no time wasted waiting for the machine to fill and empty, which for the team is very important as players can simply jump in and jump out and be back on the pitch in no time.
